APEX Harmony Lodge
SATU KAMPUNG
The client for this project is APEX Harmony Lodge, which is a home for dementia patients. Through Site Analysis, the issues that I focused on is that the patients are afraid of their condition as they feel that their condition makes them feel abnormal to society. They also feel alone due to it and that the hospital-like and cold atmosphere in AHL wasn't improving the situation. Therefore, I aim to design a welcoming, vibrant and familiar space for the patients that will also encourage patients to learn to embrace the condition.
Design Statement
To make AHL a place where patients can learn to embrace their condition, feeling a sense of belonging and to feel comfortable in AHL, not trapped. I aim for the patients to not feel as afraid of their condition, rather to accept it and feel they belong there and know that they are not going through this journey alone.
Design Concept
The Design Concept chosen for this project is Kampung days and Kampung architecture. Which is specifically the 1950s - 1980s. This timeline was chosen as based on research, dementia patients are able to remember their past times & childhood through reminiscence therapy using visuals. Therefore, the patients will be able to relate and feel a sense of familiarity and belonging through this design.
The design is also inspired by authentic Malay houses/ kampungs as several features of the Malay houses influenced the design such as the circulation, ambience, atmosphere and layout & spaces.
